What was your design inspiration? I'm a decorating magazine junkie and had a pretty clear idea what I wanted. Jamie is a carpenter and can do almost anything. But because we were undertaking such a massive renovation we did get some expert advice in the form of a professional engineer (West Edwards) and a designer (Jen Storey). How would you define the current style of your home? I call this house, "living with kids." It's modern and a little bit vintage. We wanted a home that was clean, bright and inspiring but one we don't have to be protective of. We like the bumps and dents. What was your ultimate design goal when decorating your home? We wanted a beautiful, bright family home with lots of natural light. What was the greatest challenge of decorating your home? Our greatest challenge was realizing the dream on a tight budget. We both like beautiful things. Sometimes that took restraint and ingenuity, like driving across town to inspect secondhand furniture found on Kijiji.ca. What was your biggest splurge item? The biggest splurge was the tiled showers with glass doors. Pat at Better Baths by Design helped us with that. The tile is from Emerald Tile. It's classic and an investment. What is your favourite room and why? The kitchen is our favourite room - there's so much light. It's the centre of the house and the hub of all activity - cooking, eating, crafts, entertaining, etc. HIn the kitchen, additional detail was added to the cabinets with hardware from Lee Valley. Jamie built the custom shelving. HPaperStone countertops from Living Rooms are made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper. They are impermeable to water and scratches can be easily sanded out. fThe green vanity belonged to the couple's real estate agent. "It was in her garage and she no longer wanted it," says Jillian, "I knew it was the perfect size for the powder room so I fixed it up and painted it." 2013 | kingstonlife.ca | interiors 25
